Bombay High Court

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to stop the illegal slaughter of animals during the Bakrid festival in a residential colony in southern Mumbai.

Bakrid or Eid al-Adha is being celebrated on Thursday.

At a special emergency hearing held after the regular court session,

“If the city government has not issued a permit to slaughter animals at the site, the city authorities, in cooperation with police officials, will take appropriate steps in accordance with the law to prevent the slaughter of the intended animals tomorrow.” said the court.

The Chamber heard a petition filed by Haresh Jain, a resident of the Association, seeking a total ban on animal slaughter at the Association.

Joel Carlos, an attorney representing BMC, said a complete ban cannot be imposed.

Carlos said civil affairs officials will inspect the club’s premises and take appropriate action if there are any violations.

In the order, the court said that if action is required, the police station in question must provide appropriate police assistance to local government officials.
